Last week Tuesday, Rihanna announced her partnership with Dior with the collaboration consisting of a line of futuristic glasses. The name the collection is simply called “Rihanna”. The pop star is no stranger to collaborative design as is evident in her Manolo Blank capsule and Fenty x Puma collection.
The singer, who showcased the latest designs through her Instagram account, teased her followers with pictures of herself wearing the ‘out of this world’ sunglasses.
“We are very pleased to partner for the second time with Rihanna,” said Dior chief executive officer Sidney Toledo, with the singer having already worked with the brand a year ago in “Secret Garden IV,” a campaign and short film photographed by Steven Klein inside Versailles which featured her in Dior sunglasses, carrying the brand’s bags and wearing looks from the Esprit Dior collection shown in Tokyo in December 2014. “She is an artist, an entertainer, an entrepreneur, a philanthropist, and a style icon for today’s generation.”
Inspired by La Forge”Star Trek,” the singer told WWD, “I’ve always been obsessed with his eyewear, and when I got to Dior and saw all the materials I could play with, it all just came together.”
The one frame is available in six variations — silver, pink, blue, green and red styles which will retail for $840, while a deluxe 24-karat gold-plated version will sell for $1,950, and will be available in June and sold exclusively at Dior stores.
According to Dior’s eyewear designer Mathieu Jamin, he was impressed with Rihanna’s level of involvement as this was the first time he and his team had worked with a celebrity in a design capacity. “She chose all the materials,” Jamin said. “We had a lot of different samples with different effect of metals. She chose all the lenses and took time to match all the colors together to see if it was right on her face. It was really important to her.”
