Alber Elbaz is said to leave Lanvin after a 14-year tenure. The announcement is expected to be made in the next few days to confirm his exit from the brand.
The shocking “conscious-uncoupling” between Mr. Elbaz and Lanvin came amidst rumours of irreconcilable differences between the Chief Designer and the company owner, Shaw-Lan Wang.
News came right at the heel of another prominent exit of another big designer from a luxury label, Raf Simons from Dior. While Mr. Simons departure has been speculated heavily as critics noted he had been leaving several bread crumbs in his documentary, Dior and I, Mr. Elbaz, on the other hand, was seen as having been completely out of the blue.
Known for his extremely delicate couture-like craft, Mr. Elbaz was given free reign while working for Lanvin. He managed to elevate the brand to a different stratosphere when it came to class and name recognition. However, the designer felt that the brands reluctance to invest on strategical expansion, resulted in Lanvin being eclipsed by its competitors, mainly Saint Lauren, Givenchy and Chanel.
Lanvin officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
Dior has yet to release the name of the designer that will be replacing Raf Simons. We think it’s strategic. When you’re in fashions inner circle, we’re sure news this big will be known before the media. So Dior could soon be helmed by a new designer that could fill in the big shoes of John Galliano.
