John Varvatos never fails to impress. Perhaps New York Fashion Week Men’s most important show, Varvatos who traditionally debuts his collection in Europe, chose to give the young fashion week an important designer footprint, sealing its legitimacy and significance in the fashion calendar. His show served as a homecoming (his last show in NYC was in 2008) of sort and was welcomed by an enthusiastic response from the media, buyers and the fashion community.
Though this may not be his most innovative collection, the pops of colour distracted me from the overarching aesthetic – stripes – it did bring back the men’s basics and elevated it to a modern sophistication.
Varvatos’ Spring Summer 2016 collection is another collection that borrowed themes from the 70s – Varvatos striped interpretation of Rock & Roll evoked the California-cool rock of the decade which referenced the style of Rock icons like Zeppelin. His lean suits gave each look a modern feel and the consistent stripes gave the collection a certain continuity. A classic in the making, the collection was a balance of masculinity and refinement.
